Run Safety Course

  • You are required to complete this Online Health and Safety Course before you begin operating a Delivery Run.

    Please read the sections thoroughly and answer the multi-choice questions at the end of each section.

  • Words to know first:

    • Run (or Delivery Run) = A group of streets where you deliver flyers.
    • Run Sheet = A piece of paper that has the map of streets and other information about that particular Run.
    • Run Partner = The person you’ll do your Run with.
    • Home Base = Where you’ll meet your Run Partner before the Run begins.
    • Run Manager = Your contact person for anything you need help with.
    • Run Report = What you need to fill out on your Run Sheet after each Run.
    • Sets of Flyers = A pile of the same flyers. You’ll deliver up to 6 sets of flyers per Run.
  • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

  • Footwear

    You must supply your own suitable footwear. Your shoes must be enclosed and have good cushioned soles.

    Shoes you’re allowed to wear:
    • Running Shoes
    • Cross Trainers
    • High Top shoes with good cushioning in the soles
    Shoes you’re NOT allowed to wear:
    • Bare feet
    • Jandals or sandals
    • Flat soled shoes like Chuck Taylors or Vans
    • Gumboots

    High Visibility Vest

    You are required to wear the StudentForce High Visibility vest at all times while doing your Run.

    Clothing

    You must supply your own clothing suitable for the day’s weather:

    • Sunny Days = Hat, Sunscreen
    • Cold Days = Jumper or warm jacket
    • Rainy Days = Rain Jacket (Umbrellas are allowed but not required)

    Personal Items

    We strongly recommend you don't take any personal items on your Run like cellphones or wallets. If you choose to take personal items, they MUST be concealed at all times.

    You are definitely NOT allowed to use a cellphone or music device while doing your Run. The only time you can use a personal cellphone is in an emergency situation.

  • Road Safety

  • Footpaths

    • Use footpaths where possible
    • Don’t walk on the grass next to a footpath
    • Watch for cracks and bumps that you could trip over

    Crossing the Road

    When crossing any road, even if you’re on a pedestrian crossing, always remember to - Stop, Look, Listen, Think:

    • STOP one step back from the kerb or footpath edge, don’t stand on the very edge of the road
    • LOOK in all directions for approaching traffic
    • LISTEN in all directions for approaching traffic
    • THINK about whether it is safe to cross the road
    Then:
    • Walk straight across the road. Don’t Run
    • Keep LOOKING and LISTENING for traffic while crossing
    And whenever possible:
    • Cross in a clear space so approaching traffic can see you. Don’t cross near parked vehicles or from behind large objects
    • Use a pedestrian crossings

    Crossing Driveways

    When walking along the footpath, before crossing any driveway you should:

    • Look up the driveway towards the house to check for vehicles
    • Look at the road to check no vehicles are about to turn into driveway

    Letterboxes

    • Check for any sharp objects around the letterbox before putting the flyer in it
    • Be aware of vehicles coming in or out of the driveway

  • Stranger and Animal Safety

  • Dogs

    • If an angry dog confronts you, back away calmly, don’t run as this will encourage the dog to chase you
    • If you can’t safely continue your Run, alert your Run Partner and get to a safe place. Do your best to finish the remaining roads in your Run once you’re safely away from the dog
    • Any dangerous encounter with a dog should be reported to your Run Manager

    Unknown People

    • If you're greeted by someone on your Run, smile and say hello. Remember that you are a professional person at work.
    • If they start talking to you say “Sorry, I need to keep moving”
    • If anyone says anything you don’t like report it to your Run Manager
    • If you ever feel threatened or in danger, use the cellphone to call the Police

    Working with your Run Partner

    • All Runs are done in teams of two people. You should always be able to see your Run Partner. Do not separate
    • If your Run Partner is doing anything unsafe, illegal, or against the StudentForce rules, tell your Run Manager

  • Emergencies

  • Dealing with Injuries

    Minor Injuries are:
    • A cut or scrape
    • A twisted or sprained joint like an ankle, knee, wrist or arm
    • Trouble breathing or feeling exhausted
    Action to take:
    • If you get a minor injury, keep doing the Run ONLY if it is not going to cause that injury to get worse.
    • If you can’t continue the Run safely, go home and contact your Run Manager as soon as possible.
    • At the end of the Run, fill in an Incident Report
    Serious Injuries are:
    • Being struck by a vehicle
    • Being attacked by a dog or person
    • Becoming unconscious for any reason
    • Experiencing an Asthma attack, Seizure, Heart Attack or similar
    Actions to take if you or your Run Partner has a serious injury:
    • Call 111 Emergency Services
    • Contact the Run Manager
    • At the end of the Run, fill in an Incident Report

    Natural Disasters

    If a disaster occurs, like an earthquake or tsunami, or you receive warning of one coming, go home immediately.
